Mike:Thanks, I did get your last e-mail.Your analysis confirms my conclusions about the cams and pulleys.Yes, the pulleys are different, with different part numbers. There is a front arrow pointing down toward a corresponding arrow on the block pointing up.There is a notch on the other side that lines up with the arrow on the pointer-cum-belt-cover-attachment on each cam cover. But the cams are sure 180 degrees off! The engine would have run OK but the cams simply line up with their marks at exhaust stroke TDC instead of intake.Looks like a Murphy"s Law situation - there is just one aligment pin on each pulley, but two places it can be inserted.Guess which one had been used!As for shim, my local Lambo dealer says they have a whole box of old shims that they were wondering what to do with.I"ll run out next week and take a look. This engine is showing all the signs of having been overhauled by a reasonably competent mechanic, but one who had to slap the engine back in the car 90% finished because otherwise he wasn"t going to be paid. That explains the odd missing bolt, unattached parking brake cable, air in the brake lines, and zero valve clearances. Thanks to you and everyone else for all the advice and support. I"ll post Blog #4 next week - things are moving along nicely. George Bullwinkel |
