From: "Jack Riddell" Hi Bob, > WOW! That is an "A" grade on research. I think that is the difinitive "last word" on > the subject (pretty hard to top). Thanks for the great writeup. Thanks, but remember that this is a stream of consciousness dump, and not definitive. And thankfully not including dates and numbers for which I could be held accountable. Still, I am anxious to get any corrections or constructive criticism, and we all gain from the discourse. For instance, Glen Kohut supplied: "Originally, a "brake" was a sturdy horse-drawn wagon meant for off-road use." This is something I had not heard (or maybe remembered?) and am willing to accept it as reasonable. Yet, I"m pretty sure that the original spelling was "break," mainly responding to my readings of 19th century bios and novels. I know that in today"s usage, "brake" has become a term applied to any station wagon or panel truck type vehicle (often including the the windowless variety variants of mini-vans), yet seems also to be used for SUVs recently. I value the excellent knowledge of this group, and would appreciate feedback. Cheers, Bob |
