SV: [VintageLambo] Espada first drive

Henrik Rosenberg

Body of Message

Hi Jude, I have just bought an Espada series 1 from 1969 (maybe built 1968) 3 weeks ago. The car cost me about 30.000 euro which is in the higher range, but very fair compared to the condition. My car had a bare naked body restoration 2 years ago and all inner engine and gearbox parts + suspensions + brakes + power steering was restored 10 years (3000 km) ago at the Lamborghini factory. I think the extra 10 k are very well spend, specially if you can"t or won?t do the restoring by yourself. The car its fitted with a s3 powerstering unit, and I do find the clutch much more havy than any other car I have tried. About the feeling of speed, I think that my standard Espada is pretty quick compared to even newer cars but as mentioned before the acceleration from a complete stop isn"t that impressive, but when it picks up speed...wow! I drove my Espada home from Swiss to Denmark (1300 km), and almost half the way on the german Autobahn without speed limits :) The accelerating from 130 km/h is very quick indeed and my car had no problems to keep the pace in the left lane (and they DO drive fast on the German autobahn). When my Espada reaches 200 km/h (125 mph) the acceleration becomes quite slower, and I haven"t tried more than 220 km/h (140 mph). If I had the road and the guts I guess it could do about 240 km/h, which I find very good in despite of the poor aerodynamics. But what a feeling in a 34 years old car without seat belts, I felt like I was doing 300+ km/h. The car was as beautiful and sexy as I had imagined, yet its age clearly showed.Though in decent running condition, it requires restoration inside and out. I was suprised how much effort the clutch and steering required, and once underway, was underwhelmed by its accleration. In fact, the car seemed underpowered leading me to wonder if this is a feature of the marque, or unique to this particular example?Yet, the ride was excellent and it handled well through tight corners. Long after we had parted ways and I had cleared the gas fumes out of my head, I find myself still thinking about this less-than-perfect Espada... I would love to own one, especially one that"s been "sorted out", and wouldn"t mind paying more for the privilege. But will a restored Espada provide more driving thrills? Also, is the Series III more satisfying to drive than a Series II?
