Body of Message

Ah, the Ford Popular, Anglia and don"t forget the Ford Prefect (it was talked about so much that a visitor to this planet adopted the name so that they would blend in). They were like an initiation test for a boy to prove his jump to manhood. There you were a new driver on the road having just passed your test, you are allowed out on your own for the very first time. The day is grey, it is raining hard and you come up behind a Morris Minor doing 25 mph (the only car on British roads that was slower). You wait for your opportunity, your heart beats faster, sweat is running from your temple down your cheeks. The hairs on the back of your neck stand up. You check your mirrors, you look over your shoulder to make sure because you are so used to being overtaken. You see a gap in the oncoming traffic approaching you think it is long enough but you"ve never done this before. How much of a gap do you need? How can you assess the speed of the approaching traffic? So many things to consider. You wait for the gap to arrive half preying that it will close by the time you reach it (or does it reach you, you are confused). This is it, you must lose your virginity sometime and there is no helpful 30 year old auntie to dream about. You decide to do it, you check everything again. This is it, you are about to become a real driver, you drop down a gear putting your foot to the floor so hard that you think you are about to do a Fred Flintstone impersonation. Suddenly, with a flick of the steering wheel you pull out into that gap: into the lane of oncoming traffic. You hope and prey that your judgement is right but feel reassured because if you are wrong you can always take avoiding action, just apply the brakes and drop back behind the Morris Minor. Suddenly there is nothing in front to deflect the rain which is now hammering on the windscreen with full force and ... the wipers stop! Oh the memories of that first Popular/Anglia/Prefect.
